Athletics Director Kearby

Dear Summit High School,

It is hard to believe that it is November and we are well into our forth year as Summit Sky Hawks and as the athletic director I cannot be prouder. Our fall sports teams are competing for championships and spots in the CIF playoffs. We have more students participating than ever before and they are getting the job done in the classroom.
With or without the crisis that is our state economy, it seems my job as an athletic director always has an element in which I have to justify athletics in the academic world. One of the ways I do this is by providing studies that show students that are involved in extracurricular activities (not just athletics); attend class more often than students that do not participate in extracurricular activities. These same studies show that students involved in extracurricular activities also get higher grades.
These studies can add Summit to their list of test schools because the fall grades just came out and the grades of our athletes seem to prove the study correct. We had over 350 athletes when fall grades posted. We lost 35 athletes to grades which is 10%. Not an impressive number or one I am proud of but when I took the freshmen out of the equation that number dropped to .07% (less than 1%). That is a number I am proud of.  Some of the other facts that make me proud are; we had 21 students with a 4.0 GPA, 11% of our varsity players had GPA’s above 3.5, 22% of our athletes had GPAs above 3.5, and 49% had GPAs above 3.0. That 49% with GPAs above 3.0 is just awesome.  So when I’m told that athletics have no place in the academic world, I beg to differ, just look at my “PROOF”.

Sincerely,

Ed Kearby
Athletic Director
